British Brown Bess Muskets

British Brown Bess Muskets c. 1762 and India patterns c. 1794. As can be seen,  the style of furniture and barrels are very similar in these guns. The stock is more varied and in the earlier models lacks the apron around the tang and the handrail in the butt-stock. In addition, the mound in which the lock is embedded is finer/less pronounced at the rear end in the later models. The lower two guns have been converted from flintlock to percussion and the second from bottom has also been shortened, probably for sea service. It also lacks an apron but this may have been removed when the grip was added. The picture is interactive; click to see detail of each gun.
