Very old c.1690 Germanic Jäger musket

This musket is an early example of a Germanic smooth bore flintlock hunting gun with doglock. The diameter at the muzzle is 15 mm and the octagonal to round barrel length is 86 cm. The total length of the gun is 122 cm.

The side plate is a cutaway type and of brass, as is the rest of the gun furniture. There are some nice scrolls carved into the beech or birch stock both forward and behind the cheek piece. A small brass stud is in the stock around here, but its purpose is unknown.

The banana shaped lock has some nice engraving around the middle and rear final. The doglock leaver is a recent replacement. The barrel is also in reasonable condition for the age and the side vent is nice and clear and line up nicely with the powder tray.

The stock is also reasonable condition for age, but a few cracks can be seen. A small piece of wood above the front of the lock has been inlayed to replace a missing piece, but this is an old repair and can be redone if required.

The two brass thimbles match in style and the ramrod is old.

The trigger guard also matches the style of the thimbles.

The brass buttplate is also in the same style as the rest of the furniture and the patchbox cover looks original, with an old German design engraved into the rear end.

The numbers 44 are carved into the underside of the patch-box lid.
